Adjudicators

Greg enjoys working with university-aged musicians and has held positions at the University of Toronto, McMaster University, Acadia University and Mount Allison University. He was Director of Arts at Hillfield Strathallan College in Hamilton, ON from 2005-2015.

Greg’s association with professional orchestral music in Halifax dates back to the Atlantic Symphony days and continues with Symphony Nova Scotia, with whom he performed, for many years, as a trombonist and is now a regular guest conductor.
He has been privileged to have been Music Director of the York Symphony Orchestra, The North York Concert Orchestra, the McMaster Chamber Orchestra, the Halton-Mississauga Youth Orchestra, as well as the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra.

When not making music, Greg keeps busy working on his family’s farm in Middleton, New Brunswick, as well as spending time with his grandchildren, Linus, Edie and Leyda.

Dr. Dawson is currently an Associate Professor and the Director of Bands at the University of Manitoba Desautels Faculty of Music where she conducts the Concert Band and Wind Ensemble, teaches courses in music education and oversees the graduate wind conducting program. Jacquie served on the board of directors of the Manitoba Band Association from 1999 – 2005, was the treasurer of the Canadian Band Association from 2022 – 2023 and remains active with numerous MBA projects. She was the Artistic Director of The Winnipeg Wind Ensemble from 2009-2020. Jacquie is the one of the founders of the Winnipeg Youth Wind Ensemble and is the founder of the newly formed Winnipeg Chamber Winds Collective. She has been a recipient of the University of Manitoba Strategic Initiative Initiatives Fund, a UM Explore SHRCC grant, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning grant, and awarded a University of Manitoba Community Engagement Award for outstanding service and community activity. Jacquie is a strong advocate for music education and is a clinician for the Yamaha Canada True North Master Educator program.

Dr. Dawson has been published in the Canadian Music Educator Journal and the Canadian Winds Journal and has presented at conferences internationally, including the Canadian Music Educators’ Association National Conference, the Kansas Music Educators Conference and the International Society for the Research and Promotion of Wind Music Conference. She is an active proponent in the promotion of new wind band works and has led or participated in numerous commissions and premieres of works by Gary Kulesha, Kenley Kristofferson, David Scott, Viet Cuong, Steven Danyew, Holly Harrison, and Peter Meechan. J SEQ CHAPTER \h \r 1acquie received undergraduate degrees in music and music education from Memorial University of Newfoundland and holds a master’s degree in conducting from the University of Manitoba where she studied with Dr. Dale Lonis and Earl Stafford. She completed a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from the University of Kansas under the tutelage of Dr. Paul Popiel.

A native of Toronto, Dr. Hopkins earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the New England Conservatory while serving as Assistant to Frank L. Battisti, and was awarded the Gunther Schuller Medal at graduation. Earlier, Dr. Hopkins taught music in high schools for twelve years, including seven years’ service as Chair of the Music Department at Upper Canada College in Toronto. His professional work as a Conductor spans the full range of ensembles and genres. He is Founding Music Director (Emeritus) of the Toronto Wind Orchestra and the Alberta Winds, freelance professional wind ensembles in Toronto and Calgary. Dr. Hopkins lectured and conducted the Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Choirs at Hanover College in Indiana. From 2002-2005 he led ensembles and taught at the University of Calgary in Alberta. In 2019 Dr. Hopkins was awarded the National Band Award by the Canadian Band Association, “ In recognition of outstanding contributions to band at the educational, community, and professional level in Canada.”
